Gerard Murphy Furniture
Gerard Murphy Furniture is an owner-operated business located in Dunkeld, at the Southern tip of The Grampians National Park.
Gerard Murphy and Kay Leyshon relocated their workshop and showroom to Dunkeld several years ago. Gerard designs and makes truly “high-end” furniture and smaller objects from a range of quality cabinet timbers.
The GMF design ethic draws heavily from visual cues provided by the Southern Grampians. Gerard often derives design ideas from the mountains, for example, the upward surge of a chair back, dominating the overall appearance of the piece, has probably found its origin in some part of the Serra Range skyline. His furniture designs can be described as ‘Timber As Art’: an enduring idea in an enduring medium.
The showroom/gallery in Dunkeld showcases a variety of original pieces, including dining tables and chairs, side tables, beds, bedside tables, coffee tables, nests of tables, sideboards, entertainment units and tall boys. Timbers include Red Gum, as well as Victorian Ash, Tasmanian Blackwood, Marri, various Stringybarks and reclaimed Jarrah. Some designs use combinations of timbers, with delicate inlay work providing a subtle complementary effect.
Gerard has also designed an extensive range of beautifully crafted serving-ware and giftware: cutting boards, cheeseboards, knife blocks, rolling pins, fire pokers, letter racks, vases, trays, clocks and turned bowls, in a variety of timbers. These make distinctive gifts for weddings, birthdays and other special occasions.
A bespoke design consultation service is available for those desiring to help create their own exquisite piece.
