Sip your way through this amazing region and treat yourself with a visit to one of Greater Hamilton’s best wine bars, when they again welcome in-house guests (soon please!).
Whether you’re after a glass of red, white, rosé or something a little different, you can count on these guys to provide you with nothing but the very best! Our wine bars stock wines from all over the world, including those that are harvested, crushed, fermented and bottled right here in our very own Henty wine region!
The Penny Wine Bar
Wine + Dinner = Winner, which is what you’ll be if you head down to The Penny Wine Bar in Penshurst at the base of Mt Rouse. Sip on some of the region’s finest wines over a yarn with charismatic owner, Trevor, and enjoy the ambiance of the quirky bluestone Penny Bar, a European inspired space where you can enjoy good company and even better food in every nook and cranny. This supper-styled bar feels like a homely friend’s lounge, and not only offers up a wide variety of wines but also specialises in the art of lovingly prepared home cooked comfort food.
Wine down and settle in for a night at the Obsidian Room, Hamilton’s newest wine and cocktail bar. Relax and unwind with espresso martinis on tap, premium wines or one of their famous strawberry daiquiris. Pair your drinks with a bar snack like a trio of dips or a plate of onion rings. Enjoy a drink at the bar, in a booth, at a table or sink into the couches that look out onto one of the town’s busiest streets. The Obsidian Room is a spacious bar perfect for a large get–together (when the time is right) or an intimate catch up, with some nights treated to a live performance or local artist showcasing their talent. There’s always the opportunity to be the talent yourself, with a piano that sits patiently waiting for someone brave enough to put on a show!
Stop and smell the Rose at The Roxburgh in Hamilton, a beautiful two-story bluestone building just waiting to welcome you with a nice glass of wine and a menu loaded with crowd favourites. The Roxburgh has a great atmosphere that oozes opulence and comfort, treat yourself to one of their traditional Italian style pizzas, wood-fired to perfection or share their menu of tasty bites with friends over a quiet drink in their courtyard. With live music in an even livelier laneway in summer, and the smell of coffee beans roasting in winter, you’ll be on cloud wine at The Rox all year round.
Parker St Project
Take the scenic drive to Dunkeld and pay a visit to the Royal Mail Hotel’s bistro bar; The Parker Street Project, a place to wine and dine in style. Enjoy local wines by the glass or choose a bottle from their famous wine list, which draws from their award-winning Wine Cellar (pictured). Guests of the Royal Mail are able to tour the cellar and enjoy guided wine tastings with an added bonus; guests of the hotel can purchase anything tasted at a special rate. The Cellar stores an impressive 25,000 bottles and has been a constant venture for over 40 years, including the largest private collection of Bordeaux and Burgundy in the Southern Hemisphere. You can also choose from a selection of beers on tap at the Parker St Project, or cocktails inspired by their 2-hectare Kitchen Garden, to enjoy by the log fires or out in their beanbag-strewn courtyard with epic Grampians views.
Where else to enjoy wines in Greater Hamilton?
You can also meet the wine-makers and see the vines in situ if you’d rather taste wines at a Henty Wine Region vineyard, as a couple of our winemakers have lovely Cellar Doors open to the public or by appointment. Pierrepoint and Bochara will again open to the public post-COVID, and you can drink wine until your heart is content at one of our many restaurants and licenced cafes, or find Henty wines at the Hamilton Hamper (ask nicely and they may offer you a tasting!).
For now, our bars and restaurants have had to alter the way they serve you and what you’re craving. We’re keeping our Business & Community Directory updated so you know what’s open for takeaway or delivery, you can even have Henty wines delivered straight to your doorstep from our Buy Local portal too, so why not spoil yourself to a little sumthin’ sumthin’, whilst supporting local.
When our region’s wine bars are back in action, you can visit some of these atmospheric watering holes and enjoy a sip at the bar!
