If the feeling of sand in your toes (and literally everywhere else) is getting too much for you these summer months then pack a day bag and escape to the country. If you’re holidaying by the coast and find yourself needing a change of scenery, a trip through the Greater Hamilton Region, even if it is just for one day, might be just what you’re looking for. That is why we’ve pulled together some of our favourite summer hits right here in Greater Hamilton!

Mount Rouse

Start the day off by taking in the panoramic view of Penshurst from the top of Collorrer (Mount Rouse). Responsible for the rocky landscape seen on the drive from Port Fairy to Penshurst, Collorrer (Mount Rouse) is Penshurst’s very own resident volcano, part of the Newer Volcanic’s Province and resides on the third largest volcanic plain on Earth. There is a Crater located on the way up and a walking track that meanders through natural bush flora and fauna.

Spot a wallaby or two as they graze on the grounds, along with a variety of other wildlife that call the crater home. Situated further along Mt Rouse Tourist Road is the picturesque picnic area, where you can take in views of the countryside while enjoying a sweet treat or savoury serving from the Penshurst Store.

Finally, walk or drive up the remaining stretch of the road and follow the stairs up to the viewing platform. At the top you will be welcomed with incredible 360 degree views of the surrounds with views of the Grampians (Gariwerd) to the north and farmland and stony rises to the east, south and west.

Lakes Edge Adventure Playground

From Penshurst, follow the Hamilton Highway to the thriving regional centre, Hamilton. With many attractions located throughout the town, you can tailor your day to suit yourself.

Bring the dog along for the ride and enjoy a leisurely walk around Lake Hamilton. Let the pooch off lead to explore and socialise in the dog park, and let the kids run wild next door at the Adventure Park Playground.

In town, wander the main street to find a hidden gem hidden within one of the many local shops or stop by one of the cafes for coffee and cake. You’ll be spoilt for choice when deciding how to fill in the day. Remember to leave time to admire the collection of art currently displayed at the Hamilton Gallery.

Rock hopping at Nigretta Falls

For a pleasant evening, jump back in the car and take the short 15 minute drive to Wannon or Nigretta Falls were you can simply fire up the BBQ and stay for tea. With wide open spaces there’s plenty of room to play a few lawn games to help pass the time as you wait for the snags to cook. You may even decide to dip your toes or rock hop your way to the other side at the river above.

With just over an hour’s return to the coast, why not spend a day here! From volcanic plains to ancient red gums, our region oozes spectacular nature with unexpected discoveries around every corner! What is it that makes Greater Hamilton so captivating to visitors? Whether it’s the wide open spaces, the freshest air, the people or maybe it’s the fact that it has one of the best tasting tap waters in Australia – we’ll let you decide.
