You’re travelling to the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park and the kids are getting a little restless in the back.  Save your sanity and expel their energy with a stopover at the charming town of Cavendish.  Located on the Henty Highway with the Grampians (Gariwerd) on your doorstop, the locality of this town makes it an ideal respite post and these offerings make it a supreme exploration location.

Wonderful Wanderings

Stretch your legs along the banks of the resplendent Wannon River.  This glistening watercourse meanders through a historically-rich area with the established and reputable Settlers Walk along its banks, allowing you to explore just that and so much more.  This gentle and peaceful two-kilometre trail winds its way through ancient red gums, over footbridges and to a lush lagoon. The Settlers Walk was established to memorialise the soldier settlers of Cavendish and as such also takes in the sights of yesteryear; a restored settlers cottage, bluestone goal and the old Cavendish graveyard.  Plaques along the way acknowledge and hail local legends.  The surrounding landscape of The Settlers Walk is peaceful and picturesque with birdlife aplenty, ancient Red Gums and crystal river reflections.  Picnic areas scattered throughout make this an idyllic break in your journey.

Epic Eats

Enjoy a hearty feed and a distinctly delightful Cavendish view at the local watering hole; The Bunyip Hotel.  Set on the banks of the Wannon River, the outdoor picnic tables offer the best seat in the house.  Sip and feast while watching the water flow by and the red gums sway in the breeze. James Campbell, former head chef of illustrious Sydney restaurant Modiva, has returned to his home town to serve up locals and fortunate visitors a country feast with a modern-day twist.  With the food supplied, cooked and served by locals, the Bunyip Hotel masterfully highlights this impeccable region with its generously-served, freshly-made pub meals.  Their menu is ever-changing and adapting to what is ripe, in season and filled with flavour, so you are going to want to make this a regular stopover to ensure you get to try everything!
