A traditional country fair, a fast-paced pedal car grand prix, a celebration of local artists and Australia’s oldest ongoing horse jumping race; Coleraine certainly knows how to embrace some Aussie favourites and put on a cracking event. Get your diaries handy because here are four of Coleraine’s finest.
Australian Pedal Car Grand Prix
Be part of the action and excitement of The Australian Pedal Car Grand Prix. This annual event, held in October, sees the streets of Coleraine turned into an absolute hubbub of pedal cars. Teams of four or more competitors are invited to not only build a signature pedal car but then race it in a two-hour endurance contest! It’s a whole lot of fun and totally powered by the spirit and muscle of teamwork. Recently added to the event’s agenda is the coveted hot lap; participating teams nominate one driver and one pusher and complete a single circuit of the track. Fastest time recorded takes the cash prize. Now that’s pedal power!
Coleraine Art and Photography Show
Each year, during August, artists from the surrounding region, as well as interstate, flock to the Coleraine Art and Photography Show, extending them the opportunity to showcase their works which range in form and feature. A series of awards are up for grabs including, Best Work of Show, Best Watercolour, Best Oil, Best Mixed Media, Best Young Artist, Best Movement/Action, Best Landscape Photo and many more. The show runs for a weekend with an official opening/gala/presentation evening held on the first night, making for a magnificently distinguished evening out.
When an event inspires a poet to take pen to paper, you know it is something special! Australian poet and horseman Adam Lindsay Gordon was so captivated by the Coleraine Races that he scribed the famous poem ‘The Fields of Coleraine’. The Coleraine Cup and Great Western Steeplechase Day at Coleraine Racing Club takes place in September. Set in the stunning Victorian countryside, this event has been running for more than 150 years. In fact, the Great Western Steeplechase is Australia’s oldest ongoing jumps race, having first been run in 1858. The day is packed with plenty of horse racing action, free activities for the kids, live music, fashions on the field and so much more.
Established in 1863, The Coleraine Show has now been running for over 150 years, making it one of the oldest shows of the state. Each year, during the month of November, the Coleraine Pastoral and Agricultural Society expertly run a fun, fantastic and family-friendly event. There are competitions and entertainment aplenty. The fair showcases classic comps like – wood chop, sheep show, shearing, wool handling, showjumping and beaut ute. Then there are the entertainment essentials – carnival rides, show bags, fireworks, food and the grand parade. And finally not forgetting a couple of the more unique hay bale rolling and eel racing! There really is something for everyone at the Coleraine Show.
